With this top-grade tribute to a revered blues-rock release, a rock family tree has sprouted a new (blue) branch line as Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks’ nephew Derek slides deftly in to channel Duane Allman as Susan Tedeschi beautifully complements the songs that make up Layla: And Other Assorted Love Songs with her sublime smokey voice. Recorded live at the Lockn’ Festival in 2019, and surprising an unwitting audience, this expanded band cruise through to cover the entire album to magnificent effect. Along with Trucks, another former Eric Clapton collaborator Doyle Bramhall II also joins the party on a collectively brilliant take of Little Wing. Another elite guest artist also figures large as Phish frontman Trey Anastasio dives headlong into Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? and Anyday.

This first and only collaboration recording between two giants of blues guitar: Eric and Duane, is resurrected to heavenly effect by this binding of musicians; some of whom are forever woven into its very fabric as the connections run deep: Derek Trucks was named after the album, later joining The Allman Brothers Band, which was originally released on Susan Tedeschi’s birthday. Supernatural levels of performance match the spookily shared history on Freddie King’s Have You Ever Loved A Woman, Tell The Truth, Key To The Highway, and that title song with the eternal riff copied by many an aspiring guitarist. A more than noteworthy re-making of a legendary record.
