Sweet Thing

7.5/10

By Paul Davies

This conglomeration of Blues Hall of Famers has pooled together their individual artistic qualities to produce a rootsy good-time blues hued album. This second album shines hard with individual and collective stand-out performances. Lead from the front by the irrepressible Jenny Langer, whose sassy songbird vocals are outstanding, and fellow BHOF guitarist Joe Poppen, this mix of original tunes and covers makes for a heady, dirty cocktail of tunes.

Of the covers, Johnny Winter's Southern Road turns into a groove-some jam where all players take flight and show off their chops. A funky Use Me by Bill Withers segues into Dr John's Gilded Splinters marrying together these two stonewall classics into a mesmerising mash-up. Yet, it's on I'd Rather Go Blind that Jenny Langer fully displays her outstanding vocal range getting up there with Etta James. In fact, her gift for songwriting is evident right through the original tunes herein penning all the numbers herself. The upbeat title track Sweet Thing and the ballad Come Home particularly stand out.

Slinky, sassy, sweet and raucous. Bang on the nail blues doesn't come much better than this.
