High on a roll after disbanding The Black Crowes, Rich Robinson keeps the creative juices flowing exquisitely on this stellar follow up to debut Magpie waxing High Water. Written during the same Nashville sessions, High Water II rumbles on from their debut with an avalanche of rockin’ blues hues and psychedelic-tinged rhythms to sway the hips and shuffle the feet.

Tight but loose, the seamless fit and swagger of opener Sooner Or Later and The Stones’ inspired funky strut on Gimme Something sets the scene on a record drenched in southern fried sunshine sounds. There’s even a standout cameo by Alison Krauss who delivers a rolling thunder fiddle and classy vocals on Lost Boy.

With all the current clamour for a Black Crowes reunion, the Magpie Salute 100% proves it is a band easily on a par with Robinson’s previous band. No upstarts or flight of fancy, Robinson’s gang has plenty to crow about on this deep groove release.
