The Who Sell Out heads up Classic Albums Documentaries on Sky Arts

CLASSIC ALBUMS DOCUMENTARIES

THE WHO SELL OUT, SOUL II SOUL CLUB CLASSICS VOL 1

SUEDE COMING UP

PREMIERE ON SKY ARTS

The Classic Albums documentary series from Mercury Studios is well established as the ultimate guide to the albums that have defined our lives. Uncovering the untold stories surrounding the recordings, each episode is a deep dive into the DNA of much-loved classics.

Three new episodes will premiere on Sky Arts this Spring; The Who Sell Out (April 23), Soul II Soul Club Classics Vol 1 (April 30) and Suede Coming Up (May 7).  Sky Arts is now free to watch on Freeview Channel 11.

The Who: Sell Out is The Who's historic third album, marking a bold new direction for the band and dictating a new vision for popular music.  This documentary investigates the cultural upheaval of 1967, how The Who explored this through the album's concepts of pirate radio and the band 'selling out' to the world of commercial advertising. Featuring exclusive interviews with Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, the programme explores this era through the lens of classic tracks such as I Can See For Miles, Tattoo, and Relax.

Soul to Soul: Club Classics Vol 1 is the remarkable story of Jazzie B and a collective going from a DJ sound system to international recording superstars with their 1989 debut chart-topping album. The singles, Jazzie's Groove, Keep on Movin', and the global hit Back to Life propelled them to unexpected worldwide fame.  The film tells the very personal story of a black collective who, against the odds and the backdrop of Thatcher's Britain, achieved what no other sound system had done before. Jazzie B said," We went from underground to overground to international in one album".

Suede: Coming Up signified a new musical dawn for the band, as they re-grouped in the wake of Bernard Butler's departure and welcomed new guitarist, Richard Oakes. Suede cast off their dark and brooding persona and exploded in a blast of glittering, neon pop. "It was a strange mixture of self-doubt and insane almost religious self-belief," said Brett Anderson, "let's make an album full of singles and have loads of top 10 hits… and that self-belief just manifested itself".  The film includes exclusive interviews with the band, their producer, publicist, art director and manager at the time.  Coming Up spawned five of the bands Top 10 hits, including Beautiful Ones & Filmstar, and remains their biggest selling album to date.
