The Nomadic release their debut album My Mind Is Racing
New York based Australian guitarist and singer/songwriter Robert Gaylard a.k.a. lead singer-songwriter in alternative indie band The Nomadic brings a unique perspective and vision when it comes to creating music by fusing alternative rock-tinged blues and electronic pop. The band’s debut album “My Mind Is Racing” is largely inspired by Gaylard’s "Nomadic" life experience to date, and in particular his experience (as his song titles suggest) "Drifting" from place to place and culture to culture, and "Waiting" for the right moment to release his music to the world. This richly informed album is available now.
Gaylard’s inspiration and passion for starting The Nomadic began early on as a child after travelling to many countries like Myanmar (formerly Burma), Singapore and the Solomon Islands. His "nomadic" lifestyle continued into his adulthood when he began to work for the United Nations in various countries such as Kenya, Somalia, the Sudan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Israel and Palestine. His travels eventually brought him to New York in September of 2012 and motivated him to pursue his dream of establishing an indie rock band. The Nomadic was born. In 2019, Rob took a year’s leave of absence from the U.N. to focus on his musical passion and specifically on songwriting and live performance. In doing so The Nomadic perfected its unique genre-mashing sound by seamlessly and expertly blending alternative rock, blues with hints of Americana and pop.
New album “My Mind Is Racing” is heavily influenced by artists like Oasis, Coldplay, Radiohead, The Verve, Bruce Springsteen, Phosphorescent, The War on Drugs, Arizona and The 1975. The songs all relate heavily on the band’s experience travelling around the world and are influenced by numerous cultures and ways of life, boldly advocating social action, change and innovation: An example of this is the track"Grand Mistakes", as Gaylard explains, “…is really a song that captures the essence of the fact that we learn and grow from our greatest mistakes. And also, if we choose to, we can stop family trauma and mistakes from continuing in a vicious cycle.” He adds, "This is a song that addresses the theme of conflict, reconciliation and learning. For most of my professional life, I have worked in situations of conflict, including Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Indonesia and Israel and Palestine. I have often paused to reflect on the damage such conflict does, not only on those who directly participate but the trauma that gets passed on, to families from generation to generation."
The album is also a tribute to the many people fighting and struggling with depression, anxiety and sadness, and those fighting to get "Beyond Blue" . In other tracks, the band pay tribute to everyday life in New York - "Manhattan View" - and to fond nostalgia of lost life moments such as “Walk the Streets” and “Under a Georgia Sky”. There are touching family tributes in songs such as "Jeannie" whereas indie rock fans will enjoy the feelgood, carefree childhood recollections in "Skaterpark".
Title track "My Mind Is Racing" is a rocky, upbeat exploration of a theme many of us can empathise with, and that has a lot of personal resonance for UN worker and busy New Yorker Gaylard: “it’s a tribute to the high octane, high pressured city life many people live in where people embrace various “mind-calming” techniques – yoga, meditation etc- but sometimes when the heat is really on, you just cannot stop your mind from racing.”
Having been originally influenced by numerous cultures and ways of life, The Nomadic promote and advocate action, human rights and support for minorities, as well as doing the ‘right thing’, including the idea that it is never too late for people to follow their dreams and passions. With “My Mind Is Racing” The Nomadic sensitively deliver their own perspective, experience, reflection and empathy to a fast-changing world ‘in flux’ and seeking to redefine itself.
