MOUNTAIN: LIVE IN THE ‘70s

VOICEPRINT: VPD621 - THREE CD SET
RELEASED: FRIDAY, 12th NOVEMBER 2021

MOUNTAIN was one of the most popular combos to emerge from the explosion of US Hard Rock bands as the 1960s morphed into the 1970s. Featuring the larger-than-life character of Leslie West on lead guitar and vocals, and the producer/singer/songwriter Felix Pappalardi, powerhouse drummer Corky Laing and keyboard player Steve Knight, the band were a dynamic and frequently thrilling proposition as a live act, which is much in evidence on this top-value three-CD set.

Discs one and two are taken from a New Year Concert in 1971 and features such Mountain classics as ‘Don’t Look Around’, ‘Mississippi Queen’, and ‘Nantucket Sleighride’, the latter of which will be recalled by many as the theme from the ITV current affairs series, Weekend World. Disc Three is taken from a Christmas show at the Capitol Theatre in 1974, and includes a dynamic version of the Lee Dorsey hit, ‘Get Out My Life Woman’, and run-throughs of ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On’.

This release comes in the wake of the death of Leslie West in December of 2020, leaving Cork Laing as the sole surviving member of the classic Mountain lineup. This album – which is a top-quality in-concert recording – is a fine showcase for Leslie West’s rightly-acclaimed guitar skills. His matchless guitar tone and raw vocals lead the line brilliantly, with the Pappalardi and Laing rhythm section providing a gutsy backdrop for West to do his thing, whilst keyboard player Knight adds some soulful keyboard contributions to the whole.

Mountain Live in the 70s is released on the Voiceprint label on Friday, 12th November 12th 2021.
