John’s comments regarding his new book.
Over the years, family members and close friends have suggested I write a book about my time in music. My response has always been the same: “I’d write it, but who would read it?”
These well-meaning suggestions have always seemed to me to be an indication that my time in music was over, and the moment had arrived to spill my guts over the pages of some badly written rock n’ roll memoir, replete with stories of drug abuse and-on-the-road debauchery.
For decades, I resisted the urge to put pen to paper. But in spite of my profile being lower than that of Area 51 (and Area 52!), and my CDs as popular as the ice-bucket in the bar on the Titanic, I stood my ground. Meanwhile, that same ground was crumbling beneath my feet.
You see, I’ve always felt that the writing of rock n’ roll memoirs should be left to true legends of music such as Jerry Lee Lewis and Keith Richards, whose colourful lives and careers helped to write The Book of Rock n’ Roll. Whereas guys like me, who did a couple of things a long time ago, are usually working in a warehouse by now, talking music with the younger guys and tuning in to rock-radio in their lunch-break in the hope of catching one of their old tracks from “back in the day” - but I’m not.
