What began as a series of YouTube performances of classic soul and pop covers, has snowballed into Teddy Swims (real name Jaten Dimsdale) recording a couple of EPs worth of songs of his own original songs that compete in the listening stakes of his Billy Eilish and Shania Twain retreads. And he proved as much at this arresting showcase with old and new songs in the speakeasy vibe of Nola’s situated below The Lafayette music venue above.
The sparse accompaniment, to his short set list, allowed his upper scale somewhat angelic vocal range to shine as bright as his gold capped teeth especially on new single Simple Things and Amazing culled from his forthcoming EP. Teddy also has an engaging personality, to match his striking appearance, with a collection of facial tattoos that surpass those of certain recently established male artists.
Nevertheless, it’s the quality of material that speaks for itself as Blowin’ Smoke and set closer Bed On Fire, both from his Unlearning EP, demonstrated channeled through this tattooed angel voiced artist’s stylish delivery.
Most attendees in tonight’s selected audience left with the feeling that they may have witnessed a rock, pop, americana superstar in the making. A full album of new songs at this level of artistry should certainly prove them right.
