Hellfest 2022 (part 2) , Day 3 - Clisson, France

It’s rock’ n roll day, we start with the excellent newcomers “Dirty Honey” what an absolute treat at 11 AM, the Californians might be young but very seasoned at heart. Dare I say they give you a wiff of Led Zepp, with a mix of the Black Crowes and a little AC DC in the mix. All that in a brand new package that deliver songs, great tunes, nice melodies and excellent guitar work, and then there’s the vocals, with a great range Marc LaBelle takes you back and to the future of rock. I’ll be keeping an eye on them cause I’m sure I’ll say one day, I saw their first European tour… I was there.

Next up is Myles Kennedy and it’s fair to say the Alter Bridge frontman is all round an enjoyable watch. Finishing off his European tour at Hellfest with a great range of his solo work. Such classic, sun soaking sounds are perfect for today, starting with “Wake me When it’s Over” the three piece sounds solid and very well balanced, for a man that is in bands with two guitar heavy weights, he delivers swift lines one after another from his PRS or his Les Pauls, he is definitely an accomplished guitar slinger in plain hiding. One o0f the highlights is his revisiting of an old tune “Songbird” from his “Mayfield Four” days. And the reworked bluegrassy “World on Fire” works a treat. He closes his European tour on a high with “Get Along”. Look forward to seeing more of Myles and company in the future.

The Aussie boys are back, enter “Airbourne”. So much could be said about this time stopping rock classic show man. The timeless rock sound, grabbing your attention every second of the show. Their touch of ACDC sound takes you back to how rock and roll truly is alive. Songs such as “Too Much Too Young Too Fast” and “Girls in Black” are pure joy. Mix a little JD and Coke and the band goes stratospheric, well just add a little more of that mix and a song like “Run-in’ Wild” and you pure rock n’ roll pleasure. “Airbourne” to headline in no time.

“Nightwish” entertain us next, giving an Eurovision vibe to the evening but surprisingly entertaining, they have their following and is here on show. Their unique mix of Metal and classical sounds make them a really fun watch, beware they are heavy too, no joke. They play a great set that includes “Noise” “ Tribal” and “Dark Chest of Wonders” to name a few but their musicality makes this set a pleasure to watch. “Nemo” is a fan favourite and they know it, so does the audience. Just time for “The Greatest Show on Earth” as a false finale, they soak all the adoring fans love while Floor sings her vocal parts in “All the Works of Nature which Adorn the World” live. Most excellent.

The next turn is for the gunners, “Guns n’ Roses” return with a bang. The open with “Its So Easy” and “Mr Brownstone” quickly followed by “Welcome to the Jungle” that quick fire opening from Appetite shows their intent, Axl’s vocal are on fire and he delivers the goods. They throw a curve ball and play “Back in Black” with Axl sounding like a Brian Johnson clone, excellent. “Slither” is next and here we find the first niggle though, Scott Weiland’s voice was very different to Axl’s so this take sounds disjointed and more of a concession to Duff and Slash rather than a great idea like ACDCs tune. New song “Hard Skool” sounds fresh and fast, but its the “Reckless Life” deep cut that takes everybody by surprise. “Live and Let Die” goes down well, same as “Shadow of your Love”. The excellent groovy “Rocket Queen” gets the audience dancing, great to see. “You Could be Mine” gives way to Duff’s spotlight and he avoids “Attitude” in favour of “I Wanna be your Dog” they can be punk too. Fair play for playing “Absurd” but the fact that its a new one gets lost in the audience. “Civil War” alludes to the Ukraine war and the crowds respond to that, touching. Next is “Better” and “Slash’s solo spot” he really is at the peak of his powers, he just gets better and better. Being sober suits him.

Fan faves “Sweet child o’ Mine” “November Rain” and “Knocking’ on Heavens Door” are loudly sang by the crowd and perhaps from here on is that Axl's voice starts to crack. Perhaps is the length of the gig or the part of the tour they are in, but somehow he goes from “on point” to “weak in parts”

By “Nightrain” he struggles but delivers, its only in the magnificent “Coma” that he is exposed in the last minute of the song. While the band plays “Patience’s” intro he rest and recovers to deliver a fast version of “You’re Crazy” and the closing “Paradise City”. This band is still a rocking outfit, musically they are better than ever, maybe the pacing of the set was the issue today but he did recover and ended the show back on top. This is top top rock n’ roll!
