Penelope Darling - ‘Love Myself’ - The Abbey Road Interview

Working towards a forthcoming EP of original material, Darling decided to revisit her upbeat 2019 dance single 'Love Myself' during a recent session at Abbey Road studios, alongside co-writer and producer Paul Visser, whose diverse credits include Petula Clark and his own band Black Orchid Empire.

Decibel Report's Andy Rawll spoke to her about the background to the new stripped-back and emotionally-raw version of the song, as she revealed plans for the coming year, as well her admiration for contemporary artists including Sam Smith and Summer Walker.

Inspired by jazz and blues, but imbued with R&D soul, Penelope Darling's exquisite voice is certainly a precious gem that combines rich gravitas and heady emotion. The London-based singer first gained attention with her sonically sparse, yet vocally rich version of Yebba's 'My Mind', highlighting a supple and sonorous voice, with a beguiling rich chocolate lower register.

Ensconced in the historically resonant Studio 3, the live in-session-style recording was embellished by the eloquent grand piano of Gonzalo Carrera (Karnataka, dB Infusion), and revealed an artist, emboldened by the strength of her new material and primed for commercial impact.

The planned EP is expected for release by the summer. with regular live dates in both London and further afield worth looking out for.
