Paul Young - Rewind South 2019

The ever-charming, always-touring Paul Young in conversation with Mark Taylor in advance of his playhouse scorching set at the Rewind South 2019 festival. He reflects on his recent headline tour that celebrated the 35th anniversary of his breakthrough album ‘No Parlez’ that culminated in a performance at the London Palladium and the anticipation of his forthcoming UK arena tour in October as the special guest to the inimitable Cher.

He also looks back on how he progressed from fronting the popular soul revue band The Q-Tips to establishing himself as a solo artist. In 2016, he released his first bona fide solo album in 20 years, ‘Good Thing’, which is an eclectic mix of lesser-known songs by classic soul artists, performed in Young’s signature languid yet impassioned style, served-up with Memphis-spiced relish. There’s also an archive release from one of Paul’s legendary ‘Royal Family’ shows in 1985: 'Live At Rockpalast' being released by MIG music on the 27th September. https://paulyoung.lnk.to/LiveRockpalast.

In fact, during that period there was a lesser-known release, ‘Rock Swings (On The Wild Side Of Swing)’ that appeared in 2006, that’s seldom referenced in official bios, but worth seeking out. This was a one-off covers album of a wide-range of popular songs from across the ages, radically rearranged for a big-band swing treatment. Covering songs from Bruce to Bing, Soft Cell to Metallica and Eminem to Elvis, it’s a much more cohesive and fun listen than you might expect: https://open.spotify.com/album/2AaD7vB6ZdmsERlZxMLSUd
